Advisory: Counterfeit Cashier’s Cheques & Travellers’ Cheques

The Bermuda Police Service Financial Crime Unit has noticed an increase in counterfeit cashier’s cheques and travellers’ cheques locally. The typical fake cashier’s cheque appears to be mailed from the U.K. and claims to be worth $2,750. [Example shown here].

The typical fake travellers’ cheque appears to be from American Express and claims to be worth U.S. $500. [Example shown here].

It became apparent that these fraudulent cheques were in circulation after some local residents responded to a recent internet advertisement promoting an alleged ‘work from home’ opportunity.

The local banking institutions have been made aware of this matter and they remain vigilant.

The Financial Crime Unit advises members of the public who may receive these cheques to disregard them as they have no value. However, if in doubt please contact the Financial Crime Unit on 295-0011.

All incidents are under investigation. Police are appealing to members of the public who have witnessed these incidents or may have information pertaining to them to contact their respective Police Station, Police Headquarters at 295-0011 or the confidential Crimestoppers Hotline on 1 (800) 623-8477.
